David Moyes insists West Ham 'are not a club that needs money'
David Moyes insists West Ham ‘are not a club that needs money’ with Daniel Kretinsky’s investment set to aid summer spending as they prepare to face mega-rich Newcastle
- West Ham aren’t a club in need of money any more, insists David Moyes
- Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky will give West Ham power in transfer market
- Mark Noble organised a team meeting to discuss the Kurt Zouma situation
David Moyes says West Ham aren’t a club that need money anymore, outlining they’ve got their own billionaire backer in Daniel Kretinsky as they prepare to play moneybags Newcastle at the London Stadium on Saturday.
Moyes is pleased with how the arrival of his club’s new investor has slipped under the radar, saying: ‘We don’t want to be out there flashing our nice handbag… we’re going to walk about with a fake one and let people think that way.’
But he felt compelled on Friday to highlight how they can be as competitive as any Premier League side in the transfer market, adding that the next summer window will be a significant one for West Ham.
David Moyes has insisted that West Ham are no longer a club that is in need of money
The investment of Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky will enable West Ham to spend big
Asked about Kretinsky, who bought a 27 per cent stake in the club in November with a view to a potential full takeover in the future, Moyes said: ‘I’ll tell you what it does mean – we’re not a club that needs money.
‘People can talk whatever they like but we’re not a club that needs money, so from that point of view, we are in a much better position than we have ever been in years gone by.
‘I see there being another growth period here. I really do. There is a chance to go again. We’re not a football club that needs money anymore. We’re in a good place.’
West Ham didn’t make any signings in January, which could hurt them as they aim to qualify for the Champions League, though Moyes said that was not for a lack of trying. The club made three £50million-plus bids for different players, including Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips, but none were accepted.
West Ham captain Mark Noble organised a team meeting to discuss the Kurt Zouma situation
Moyes revealed that Zouma is fit to start West Ham’s fixture at home to Newcastle on Saturday
Meanwhile, Moyes also revealed that Kurt Zouma is fit to start against Newcastle on Saturday, although he did not confirm whether in-form Jarrod Bowen would feature after picking up a knock in their 2-2 draw with Leicester.
Captain Mark Noble took it upon himself to organise a team meeting recently at Rush Green to discuss the situation surrounding Zouma, who was filmed kicking and slapping his pet cat, sparking outroar and calls for him to be suspended.
As news of Zouma’s £250,000 fine spread, Noble decided he wanted the players to get their feelings off their chests with Zouma.
‘Mark took it off his own back, took responsibility and showed great leadership,’ said Moyes, whose press conference on Friday was held in person with Premier League clubs relaxing Covid-19 restrictions. ‘He showed, “I’m going to get this out in the open and out of the way. We’re going to discuss it.. See who’s happy and who’s not happy. Let’s flush it out.”
‘Ultimately we’ve got a lot of games and the players need to work together. Mark showed what he is and what he has been – a really good captain.
‘The point is pulling players together. Sometimes you need a bit of adversity to drive you on. Now we need to make sure we use all the things to our advantage the best we can. It was our own doing so we’re the ones who have to fix it ourselves, nobody else.’
