David De Gea has cut his summer holiday short in an attempt to keep hold of the No 1 shirt at Manchester United. Dean Henderson was preferred by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at times last season, after De Gea spent seven seasons unchallenged as first-choice goalkeeper at the club.
Henderson, who was called up by Gareth Southgate for England’s Euro 2020 campaign, started nine of United’s last 11 Premier League games.
And The Sun is reporting that De Gea, who also went to Euro 2020 with Spain but didn’t make an appearance, is back training weeks before he was originally meant to.
“David wants to be back and sharp. He could have taken it easy for three weeks, but he also knows Hendo (Henderson) is equally determined to prove himself to Ole,” someone inside the club told The Sun.
De Gea was Solskjaer’s preferred ‘keeper in United’s Europa League campaign, where they were beaten in the final by Villareal.
As well as missing the decisive penalty, the Spaniard failed to save any of the 11 spot-kicks he faced.

Towards the end of the Premier League season, in which United ended in second, Solskjaer said that he was spoiled for choice in the position.
When asked about the situation, Solskjaer said: “I’ve got two great keepers, two No 1s.”
Both goalkeepers have been linked with a move away from the club this summer.
Old Trafford chiefs are reportedly said to be preparing to let one of Henderson or De Gea leave this summer.

As for Henderson, Tottenham are just one of the clubs said to be lining up a move for the goalkeeper.
The England international who, before breaking into the United team, had a successful two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, says that he is ready to take the No.1 spot.
“I’ve spoken about this for years,” he said.

“Whether it gets me in trouble speaking about it, whether it holds me back at certain times, it probably does.
“But at the end of the day it’ll happen one day, and I know it’ll happen, so I’m just going to keep working hard day in, day out and my time will come. I was 100 percent born ready.
“I’ve just got to be ready for when that time comes. There’re no excuses when you step over that white line.
“You’ve got to puff your chest out and go for it and everything that you’ve put in day in, day out, all the training, everything, pays off.”
