David Beckham responds to rumours linking Lionel Messi with Inter Miami move
Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham says he has always wanted the best players at the club, amid rumours of a move for Lionel Messi, which fellow co-owner Jorge Mas says is a possibility.
Inter Miami begin their third season in MLS on Saturday against Chicago Fire and have already attracted some star names to the club in its short history.
Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi are the biggest names in the squad, while they have brought in former Tottenham and Newcastle full-back DeAndre Yedlin and have ex Arsenal and England man Kieran Gibbs at the club.
However, they have been linked with blowing those names out of the water by bringing Messi to the States, with the Miami Herald suggesting it could happen as early as this summer, despite his contract with Paris Saint-Germain running until 2023.
Beckham was non-committal on the rumours, saying his club have been linked with the biggest players on the planet since its inception, but he is happy with that.
‘I’ve always said I want the best players in our club and playing in our shirt because there’s a certain expectation,’ Beckham told the Miami Herald.
‘Unfortunately, sometimes it can be a bad thing. But most of the time it’s a good thing. When I first started this project, people were saying “This guy is coming, that guy is coming, Ronaldo is coming, Messi’s coming.”
‘At the end of the day, we need to win, whether it’s with the young kids or stars. Our fans will be happy if we have stars on the team, but they’ll be even happier if they’re seeing young players coming through our academy and lifting the MLS Cup.’
Mas was more bullish on the prospect of Miami plying his trade in Florida, admitting that he and Beckham will do their best to attract the Argentinian to MLS.
‘Leo Messi is still one of the best players in the world, his skills have not diminished,’ said Mas. ‘I think, and David has a relationship with him, if he does leave PSG, at the time he leaves it, we’d love to see Lionel Messi be a player at Inter Miami and be part of our community.
‘Can it happen? Look, we’ll push. I’m an optimist at heart. Could I see that happening? It’s a possibility.’
