Darwin Nunez compared to Robert Lewandowski by Jurgen Klopp as he backs £85m man

Darwin Nunez has been compared to Robert Lewandowski by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp who's backed the misfiring £85million striker to deliver the goods.

Klopp brought Lewandowski to Dortmund from Polish side Lech Poznan in 2008 when he was in charge of the German side. But at the time, Lewandowski wasn't the goal machine he is now, and Klopp had to defend playing him instead of Dortmund's star striker Lucas Barrios to the media.

Lewandowski's accuracy in front of goal was so bad back then, he and Klopp used to bet against him scoring more than 10 goals in shooting sessions. But Klopp wasn't worried by Lewandowski's inefficiency because he saw potential in the striker.

Klopp's hunch proved to be right as Lewandowksi has gone on to become one of the most prolific strikers in the world, winning the Ballon d'Or and European Golden shoe last season at Bayern Munich, before joining Barcelona where he's already bagged 13 goals in 14 La Liga games this term.

And Klopp's adamant that Nunez will have a similar career spurt to Lewandowski, which is why he isn't worried about the Reds striker's poor return this season. When comparing the two strikers, Klopp explained: "Journalists would ask me why he (Lewandowski) was playing instead of Lucas Barrios, who had scored 16 the previous season.

"Lewi would play different positions, like No 10, to learn different things and develop his game but didn't like it too much. We had shooting sessions where we had bets — if you score more than 10 I will pay you €10 (£8.86).

"If you don't you have to pay me. My pocket was full of money! It was about staying calm. When you see potential, stay calm. Is everything right? No. But it is all coming. I am super calm about it.

"The team believe in him and that is really cool." Nunez has faced intense scrutiny since his move to Anfield from Benfica in the summer as he's scored just five Premier League goals in 11 appearances, missing a slew of sitters along the way.

The Uruguayan failed to find the net again during Liverpool's 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day, but he'll get the chance to prove his worth once more on Friday night when the Reds take on Leicester City.
