Danny Murphy backs rule change where teams lose player when manager is sent off

Danny Murphy has backed a rule change which would see teams lose a player when their manager is sent off.

The radical new proposal has been put forward at a time when the conduct of managers on the touchline is a hot topic in the Premier League. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was given his marching orders by referee Anthony Taylor for berating assistant referee Gery Beswick during his side's win over Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Klopp, who was incensed that a foul had not been awarded for a challenge on Mohamed Salah, later apologised but has since been charged by the Football Association.

In the days since the incident, the idea that teams should lose a player when their manager is shown a red card has been floated by supporters and pundits.

Discussing the proposal on talkSPORT, former Liverpool midfielder Murphy explained: "Some of these ideas are preposterous but that really isn't, because it impacts the game there and then. It punishes the behaviour and it would nip it in the bud.

"You couldn't do it where it would be captain, as someone suggested, as they would give someone less important the armband maybe.

"But if you brought that rule in, overnight managers' behaviour would change more dramatically than anything else we've ever seen."

Elsewhere, Chris Sutton has called for Klopp to be handed a 10-match touchline ban for his actions in order to act as a deterrent to other managers.

Fans are not convinced by Murphy's backing of the proposed rule change, with one simply tweeting: "Worst idea ever."

Another added: "Why are they so keen to eradicate the humane & emotional side of footy? I don't want a sanitised & robotic show. The absurdity of this 'idea'!"

Klopp was able to take his place in the dugout for the Reds' narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham United on Wednesday night, having been given the opportunity to appeal against his FA charge before receiving a ban.

He is not the first Premier League gaffer to be shown a red card this season, either, with both Thomas Tuchel and Jesse Marsh sent to the stands earlier in the campaign.
