Daniel James and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have held crunch talks over Man Utd future

Manchester United forward Daniel James has held crunch talks with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over his future.

The Welshman’s position in the starting XI is looking less secure after the £72m arrival of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

It has seen Leeds, who nearly secured the forward’s signature in 2019 after a medical, reignite their interest in the 23-year-old.

But The Athletic have reported that Solskjaer and James have talked the situation out.

The pair spoke ‘a fortnight ago’ about his future, with the manager saying that he would ‘not be leaving’ the Old Trafford club.

This matches up with reports last month that United would keep the Welshman at the club, keeping one eye on Marcus Rashford’s injury situation.

And the report adds that Solskjaer is keen on keeping the 23-year-old for his ‘attitude and application’ of his attacking tactics.

While James’ ‘speed’ provide an alternative for the United, with the boss seeing this as ‘totally dependable’.

The forward is into his third season at United, having joined from Swansea for £15m to score nine goals in 73 appearances.

Solskjaer’s next game sees his side travel to the south coast against Southampton, looking to make it two wins from two to open their Premier League campaign.

With Sancho coming on for 15 minutes to replace James, it is expected that the Englishman will be given his first start at St. Mary’s.

He arrived at United with a strong record from Borussia Dortmund, scoring 40 goals and making 36 assists over the last two seasons.

But Solskjaer may also have been given a dilemma for his attacking options following a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley in the week.

Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard combined to add the second goal in a 3-1 win.

With the pair having featured throughout the preseason fixtures, it provides the manager with more options to consider in attack.
