Cult hero who featured at Euro 2016 joins non-league club as fans laud signing
Cult hero Will Grigg has dropped into non-league – seven years after making Euro 2016 with Northern Ireland.
Striker Grigg is best known to many football fans for the famous chant, ‘Your defence is terrified because Will Grigg’s on fire’, a reworking of Gala’s ‘Freed From Desire’ which became a hit among Wigan supporters and Northern Ireland fans at the Euros in France, even though he failed to play a single minute at the tournament in France.
Following a prolific three-and-a-half years with Wigan, Grigg’s career has stuttered since his £3million move to Sunderland in January 2019. He struggled to live up to that inflated price tag and ended up having loan spells at MK Dons and Rotherham.
A permanent switch to MK followed last summer but following the Dons’ relegation to League Two, Grigg has been on the move again, joining National League side Chesterfield.

The 31-year-old will be charged with trying to fire the Spireites back to the Football League after they were agonisingly beaten by Notts County on penalties in the National League play-off final last season.
Grigg said being reunited with manager Paul Cook, who he played under at Wigan, was a big factor in his decision.

“[Paul Cook] had a massive role [in bringing me into the club],” he said. ”For me to drop down to the National League, it had to be something special.
“As soon as I found out about the interest, it was something I wanted to pursue. To finally get it over the line is an amazing feeling.”
The signing has got Chesterfield fans excited ahead of the new season. One said: “Squad already a massive improvement. Realistically can’t see another team surpassing our points total for next year.”
Another declared: “Will Grigg's signing will set the pitch on fire!” A third added: “Welcome to the Spireites, Will. Some of the away grounds might be a bit of a culture shock. Look beyond it and show them what you're made of.”
A fourth said: "Fair play. Another bit of superb business." Meanwhile, another asked: "How the hell have we pulled this off?"
