Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro has paid tribute to the 37-year-old striker after Portugal were dumped out of the World Cup by Morocco on Saturday night. Aveiro lauded her brother in a social media post and said she would tell her grandchildren that he “never gave up even when they had already buried him.”
“When my grandchildren ask me to talk about struggle, honour, glory, work, dedication, obstacles, human evil in exchange for envy, when they ask me to talk about trophies, goals, prizes, records of an unprecedented legacy, I’m going to talk about my brother,” she wrote on Instagram.
“Their uncle, who was born in a simple house in the middle of the ocean far from the capital of Portugal.
“Where inside there were buckets and bowls to catch the rainwater that so often came in heavy weight, where the floor was beaten earth covered with plastic (to look like a floor), where food was cooked with wood, where hot bath water was heated over a fire, where his four brothers slept in his room, supported by two mattresses supported by bricks, where his father he was an ex-combatant and survivor of the overseas war and his mother was an orphan who left an orphanage and raised her family.
“I will tell them about the empire he built, I will tell them his strength, what he promised and he kept. I will tell you about his character, I will tell you that he never gave up even when they had already buried him. I will show the movie, the real life movie of their uncle.
“And thank god I am part of it. Part of his life. And what a beautiful life it is. So proud. He is the my brother. Yes the Cristiano Ronaldo. Pride is the word. Thank you bro.”

Ronaldo was named on the bench for the second consecutive match as Portugal began their quarter-final encounter on Saturday. The veteran had started all three of his country’s group matches but was dropped for the knockout games with Switzerland and Morocco.
The blockbuster star eventually came off the bench six minutes into the second half after his country had fallen behind when Youssef En-Nesyri headed home at the end of the opening period. Ronaldo struggled to get into the game but had the opportunity to equalise in stoppage time at the end of the match as he raced through on goal. But he was denied by Morocco goalkeeper Bono. And the ex-Manchester United star now looks set to end his career without getting his hands on the biggest international trophy on offer.
