Cristiano Ronaldo’s ex-girlfriend ‘lost 11m Instagram followers in 24 hours’

Cristiano Ronaldo once cost former partner Irina Shayk millions of Instagram followers in less than 24 hours shortly after the couple broke up.

The ravishing Russian, who dated Ronaldo between 2010 and 2015, urged fans to unfollow her if they "only know her as Cristiano Ronaldo's ex-girlfriend" back in 2016, sparking something of a mass exodus.

She lost 11 million followers overnight, around 75% of her total at the time, demonstrating the mammoth impact Ronaldo had on her fame.

The two met in 2009, just after Ronaldo joined Real Madrid from Manchester United for a then world record fee of £80m, and began dating shortly after.

Their five-year romance came to an end in January 2015, allegedly because Irina wanted a child and Cristiano didn't want any distractions from the game, though there are also rumours the two had a bust-up when the model refused to attend Ronaldo's mother's birthday party.

A few months later Irina was in a relationship with Hollywood hunk Bradley Cooper, with whom she split from in 2019.

Ronaldo meanwhile started dating Argentinian model Georgina Rodriguez in 2016. The couple are still together and have three children, one born in 2017 and twins born in 2022 – though tragically, the male twin died during childbirth.

Despite losing a large chunk of her fans after splitting from Ronaldo, Irina now boasts over 21m followers on Instagram, though she's dwarfed by her ex's eyewatering 564m followers – a record on the platform.
