Cristiano Ronaldo 'very upset' not to qualify directly for World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘upset’ Portugal did not qualify directly for this year’s World Cup according to one of his Manchester United teammates.

Portugal finished second in their World Cup qualification group behind Serbia, meaning they must now win in two play-off matches to secure their place in Qatar.

Ronaldo’s side lost 2-1 in the crucial final qualifying game against Serbia as they ended three points behind the Group A leaders.

To make it football’s showpiece tournament, Portugal will have to beat Turkey then one of Italy or North Macedonia. 

Now, Ronaldo’s United teammate Fred has revealed the Portuguese player is ‘very upset’ his country did not directly qualify.

‘We talk a little bit about this. Of course, he’s very upset about not qualifying directly for the World Cup,’ Fred told Eurosport.

His Manchester United teammate Fred said ‘Ronaldo will work hard to be at this World Cup’

‘But, as a great player and as their captain, he knows how to prepare his team-mates in order to qualify. Obviously, he was very upset but he will work hard to be at the World Cup.

‘Everybody knows that he wants to win everything, every time. So rest assured he will work hard to be at this World Cup.’

Ronaldo has played in four World Cups having first featured in the tournament in 2006.

Should Portugal reach Qatar and Ronaldo be part of the squad, he will move alongside Antonio Carbajal, Lothar Matthaus, Rafael Márquez and Gianluigi Buffon as the player to have been at the most World Cups. 

His longtime rival Lionel Messi as well as his former teammate Sergio Ramos could both also play at their fifth World Cup in Qatar. 

The furthest Ronaldo has made it in the tournament came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-final but were defeated by France.

They would then go on to lose 3-1 to Germany in the third-place playoff.
