Cristiano Ronaldo told Man Utd board he would leave if Ralf Rangnick stayed

Cristiano Ronaldo warned Manchester United’s board that he would leave the club at the end of the season if Ralf Rangnick was appointed manager on a permanent basis.

The German took interim charge of the Red Devils in December, replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer until the end of the campaign after the Norwegian’s sacking.

Despite a steady start, Rangnick’s stint in charge quickly unravelled and there were widespread reports of discontent among the squad.

Ronaldo’s future has been the source of much speculation since the news that Erik ten Hag will take charge at Old Trafford, with the 37-year-old not an ideal fit for the Dutchman’s preferred playing style.

However, Ten Hag has suggested that he wants to keep Ronaldo and the veteran is happy to stay at the Theatre of Dreams.

But things could have turned out very differently for the Real Madrid legend had United opted to stick with Rangnick.

Though the German’s time in charge hasn’t gone to plan, United did consider keeping him in place if they were unable to attract either Ten Hag or Mauricio Pochettino.

Had that been the case, ESPN claim Ronaldo would have left and he told United’s board as much as early as last January.

Ronaldo was unimpressed with Rangnick and felt undermined by comments he had made to the media, with the German questioning the work-rate of United’s attacking players.

The 37-year-old was also not fond of Rangnick’s backroom staff and felt that they were not of the necessary quality to take the club back to the top.
