Supporters will be dreaming of more memorable moments for the forward at Old Trafford

Old Trafford was a picture of delight before kick off as fans awaited their hero’s arrival

It always seemed inevitable Ronaldo would get the nod as farms swarmed to the stadium wearing his iconic No 7 shirt and looking to catch a glimpse of their hero as he arrived ready for the 3pm kick-off.

Solskjaer decided to go with Ronaldo as his main forward in a 4-2-3-1 formation against Steve Bruce’s men, with his countryman Bruno Fernandes supporting him just behind and Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho on the wings.

All three of United’s big summer signings were in the line-up with Raphael Varane lining up alongside skipper Harry Maguire.

Ronaldo has been pictured strutting his stuff in his first week of training after a period of isolation at his Cheshire mansion following international duty with Portugal last week – where he netted a double to clinch a late win over the Republic of Ireland.

Solskjaer stressed it was important to ‘manage’ his star No 7 to get the best out of him and insisted there was mutual respect between them.

‘He’ll definitely be on the pitch at some point, that’s for sure,’ said the United boss. ‘He’s been having a good pre-season with Juventus, he’s played with the national team, and had a good week with us.

His boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hinted he could start and said he would definitely be involved

‘We’ve got mutual respect for each other but he knows I’ve got to make the decisions when to play him and when not to play him. It’s my job to manage him.

‘I want to get the best out of Cristiano and that comes from communication. We spent a few years together at the club and we know each other. He doesn’t need me to tell him what to do, he’s already had the determination and desire to be the best.

‘Ryan Giggs played until 40 and I wouldn’t be surprised if Cristiano ends up with the same age as Ryan.’
