Cristiano Ronaldo on course for unwanted first in his career

Cristiano Ronaldo is on course for an unwanted first in his storied 21-season career – after Portuguese star sees his side Al-Nassr side suffer a major shock in the King Cup of Champions semis

  • Al-Nassr crashed out of the King Cup of Champions on Monday evening
  • It was the third time they have failed in a cup competition this season
  • The league title is now their final chance of silverware and they sit second

Cristiano Ronaldo in on course for a career first – and it’s certainly one that he will not be happy about.

The Al-Nassr superstar was left fuming as his side were knocked out of the King Cup of Champions by Al-Wehda in a huge upset in Saudi Arabia on Monday.

Having beaten their opponents 4-0 just two months ago – a game which saw Ronaldo score all four goals – the hosts were expected to breeze into the final and set up a heavyweight clash against Al-Hilal.

But the newly-promoted side had other ideas, and one goal was enough for them to secure a route to the final and knock Ronaldo’s Nassr out of the competition at the semi-final stage.

It marked the third time this season that Al-Nassr have come up short in a cup competition, having lost in both the Riyadh Super Cup and the Saudi Super Cup.

It means Ronaldo now has just one shot left for a trophy in his debut campaign, that being the league title.

If he fails it will be the first time in his career that he has gone back-to-back seasons without claiming silverware, having also ended his comeback campaign with united trophy-less.

And they have their work cut out for them, trailing Al-Ittihad by three points – having played a game more – with just six outings remaining.

It would be the fifth trophy-less season of his career, having had three with United and one with Real Madrid.
