Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner against Atalanta in Manchester United’s last Champions League outing at Old Trafford two weeks ago, with his side winning 3-2 after being 2-0 down. And in the return fixture in Bergamo on Tuesday night, the Portugal star was booed on his first return to Italy since he left Juventus in the summer.

After being 2-0 down at home to Gianpiero Gasperini’s men, Ronaldo finished the comeback with a superb header in the dying embers of the game.

His big-match mentality has given him a platform to succeed throughout his entire career, and he will look to do the same again tonight to put La Dea to the sword.

Having scored four goals in just seven games against the Bergamo-based outfit, Atalanta fans were not be looking forward to the Portugal star facing their side.

And the home crowd at the Gewiss Stadium booed in unison as he entered the pitch to warm up.

United signed the Portugal man back in August after a 12-year hiatus from Old Trafford.

Having sold him to Real Madrid in 2009, he excelled in the Spanish capital, winning countless individual accolades and four Champions League titles.

His move to Juventus in 2018 saw him pick up two Serie A titles before Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan stole the show by breaking Juventus’ 10-year run of consecutive titles.

And having scored 81 goals in just 98 league games in the Italian top-flight, Atalanta fans will be hoping he doesn’t continue his spell of dominance on his return to northern Italy.

Solskjaer came under intense fire for losing 5-0 at home to arch-rivals Liverpool just over a week ago.

But their 3-0 win at Tottenham – which started with a Ronaldo goal – has given him more confidence to go on and get a result.

Bruno Fernandes gave an indication that he is more willing to be a creator rather than the team’s goalscorer in the press recently.

“Obviously the team we have such good quality,” Fernandes said in a pre-match press conference.

“They were big part of the result on Saturday but with quality we have it is easy to play behind any striker we have.

“All different but all of them can score goals. I am just there to serve them and make them happy.”
