Cristiano Ronaldo becomes leading goalscorer in FIFA history after latest goal

Cristiano Ronaldo has now scored the most goals for club and country in men’s professional football after netting effort no.806 against Tottenham.

Ronaldo equalled the record of 805 goals held by Austrian-Czech Josef Bican when he opened the scoring at Old Trafford with a sensational 30 yard strike, finding the top corner 12 minutes into the contest.

Moments after his side were pegged back through a Harry Kane penalty, Ronaldo latched onto Jadon Sancho’s cross to restore the lead and take the record as his own.

Ronaldo’s record haul has come in 438 games during spells at Sporting CP, United, Real Madrid, Juventus for playing in international competition with Portugal.

The record takes into account goals scored in FIFA competition.

The 37-year-old missed last Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City through a hip injury but returned to the starting XI on Saturday to play a key role.

He has now scored 17 goals in 32 appearances since returning to Manchester.

Ronaldo has made a career of breaking records and is already the leading men’s goal scorer in international competition with 115 of his goals coming for Portugal.

The veteran forward is also the top scorer in the history of the Champions League having scored 140 times in that competition – 15 more than old rival Lionel Messi.
