Cristiano Ronaldo among stars pictured returning to training amid Man Utd unrest

Cristiano Ronaldo has been pictured returning to Manchester United training after missing Sunday's derby against Manchester City.

The Portuguese star was among several players snapped driving into the club's Carrington training complex on Tuesday amid rumours of unrest within the squad.

United's players were given the Monday off after the derby day hammering against City – not that Ronaldo needed the recovery time having missed the game altogether.

Ronaldo wasn't at the Etihad to witness the club's capitulation at the hands of their near neighbours, instead choosing to fly to Lisbon on Sunday evening.

That is according to the Manchester Evening News, whose report added that Ronaldo returned late on Monday evening as he looks to recover from his hip problem.

The 37-year-old drove into United's training ground on Tuesday in his £150,000 Cadillac Escalade – a birthday present from his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.

The car's sun visor covered Ronaldo's face as he went past photographs and into the sprawling complex.

And the under-fire star wasn't the only United player spotted driving into Carrington.

David De Gea, Edinson Cavani, Scott McTominay, Alex Telles, Dean Henderson and Anthony Elanga, among others, were also spotted making their way into the training ground.

Cavani also missed the trip to the Etihad but his presence at training on Tuesday should give Ralf Rangnick a big boost ahead of their weekend clash against Tottenham.

However, their is no guarantee the Uruguayan will still be at Old Trafford next year, with the forward's contract up for renewal again in the summer.

The 35-year-old signed a one-year extension last summer but has barely featured this term following the re-arrival of Ronaldo, making just 15 appearances in total.

Henderson is contracted until 2025 but could also look to leave in search of regular first-time football after failing to dislodge De Gea as the club's no.1 goalkeeper.

The future looks a lot brighter for Elanga, who has rewarded Rangnick's faith in him with a series of good performance and important goal contributions in recent weeks.

He signed a new deal in December that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2026, with the option for another one-year extension after that.

Elanga has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal couple of weeks for United as their hopes of finishing in the top four have faltered significantly.

The Red Devils were leapfrogged by Arsenal at the weekend and find themselves at a significant disadvantage to the Gunners who have three games in hand.

Rangnick will be hoping his side can deliver an immediate response to their drubbing against City when they face fellow Champions League rivals Tottenham on Saturday.

Spurs are also involved in the race for the top four and did their chances no harm at all with a 5-0 drubbing of Everton on Monday night.

"For us it's clear," Rangnick said on Tuesday. "If we still want to have a chance to finish fourth at the end of the season, we can almost not drop any more points.

"We also know that in those 10 games that we have to play, there are a few difficult ones, so let's take it game by game."
