Conor McGregor has reiterated that he may be willing to purchase a stake in Manchester United in the near future, while claiming that talks have already taken place over the possibility of acquiring shares in Scottish club Celtic. The Irishman previously suggested that he could look to buy the Red Devils with a light-hearted tweet in the wake of last month’s European Super League debacle.
United were included in the widely-criticised proposals, which have since been abandoned by all but three clubs, along with five other Premier League sides after the Glazer family negotiated their involvement.
The controversial owners have since come under intense scrutiny from supporters, with the relationship between the club and its fans seemingly at an all-time low.
A large-scale protest caught the eyes of the football world earlier this month as United fans took to the Old Trafford pitch before kick-off in their scheduled match against Liverpool, with the fixture eventually postponed as a result of the safety and security concerns posed.
Although the Glazers have since underlined their reluctance to sell the club, McGregor has remained vocal in his desire to purchase a stake in the 20-time Premier League champions.
The Dublin native announced on Monday that he retains a keen interest in the Red Devils, but revealed that a future takeover of Celtic could be his new focus, admitting that negotiations have taken place with majority shareholder Dermot Desmond.

“A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest,” said McGregor in response to an inquisitive fan on Twitter.
“To acquire shares from Dermot Desmond. I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage!
“Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure. But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club.”
It remains to be seen whether McGregor will eventually act on his interest in buying a stake in United, in a move that would undoubtedly mark one of the strangest takeovers in the history of the game.
However, it seems unlikely that he would stand any chance of sealing a majority purchase, even if the Glazer family decide to change their mind on selling the club.
McGregor’s net worth reportedly stands at around £181million, which pales in comparison to the astronomical sum that would be needed to take control of the Red Devils.
The club were valued at £3billion by Forbes last month, putting them fourth on the global rich list behind Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
‘The Notorious’ has previously admitted to being a United fan as a youngster while growing up in Ireland, although he stressed that he mostly enjoyed playing football rather than watching it.
“I was big into football as a kid, but more as a player than a watcher,” he wrote in his Irish Independent column back in 2015.
“I suppose if you pushed me I would say Manchester United, but that’s only because it gets passed down from generation to generation.
“I think just about everyone in Ireland is either a Liverpool or United fan.
