Colombia 0-1 Peru: Edison Flores earns visitors stunning qualification win as James Rodriguez and Liverpool target Luis Diaz fail to save their side from making it SIX games without a goal in the hunt to reach the 2022 World Cup

  • Substitute Edison Flores gave Peru a huge win in the race to reach the World Cup
  • The wideman fired the winner beyond David Ospina with five minutes remaining
  • Toiling Colombia made it six games without a goal and are at risk of missing out
  • Porto winger and Liverpool target Luis Diaz had few moments of real inspiration

Colombia suffered a sixth successive shut-out as resilient visitors Peru earned a memorable late win in World Cup 2022 Qualifying on Friday.

Substitute Edison Flores raced clear on the left, entered the penalty area and beat Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina at his near post with a low shot in the 85th minute to win a tight contest at the Estadio Metropolitano.

Porto livewire Luis Diaz, who is being strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, was unable to break the deadlock as Colombia had the better of play before the goal.

Former Everton midfielder James Rodriguez, who currently plays for Al-Rayyan, was also foiled

The 25-year-old went on one mazy run towards the end of the first half and sent a shot comfortably over the crossbar with around ten minutes to go as Colombia endured their second defeat on that six-game run.

Former Everton midfielder James Rodriguez also had plenty of possession without being able to fashion a meaningful opening, only managing to thunder a shot wide in additional time.

The win was the third in a row for Peru, moving them above Uruguay into the fourth and final automatic place for World Cup qualification.

Fifth-placed Colombia are three points behind Peru ahead of their trip to Argentina on Tuesday. Peru host Ecuador the following night.
