Christian Eriksen's first words after fairytale return to the Premier League
Christian Eriksen ‘can’t wait to get started’ after completing a fairytale return to the Premier League with Brentford.
The former Tottenham midfielder has signed a six-month deal in west London but will be offered new terms if he impresses manager Thomas Frank.
Eriksen has not played since suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland last summer. In harrowing scenes, he was brought back to life by medical staff in front of his team-mates and fans.
The 29-year-old won the Italian league title at Inter Milan last season but he had his contract cancelled last month as players fitted with pacemakers cannot play in Serie A.
However, the Premier League does not have the same regulations and Eriksen has signed a short-term deal with Brentford, insisting he is ‘happy’ to join the club.
‘Hi everyone it’s Christian Eriksen,’ he said in a video uploaded to social media.
‘I’m happy to announce that I have signed for Brentford Football Club. I can’t wait to get started and hopefully I’ll see you all very soon.’
Brentford director of football, Phil Giles, added: ‘We first discussed the possibility of Christian joining Brentford when we heard that he would be leaving Inter. It is fantastic that he is now with us.
‘Naturally the process of signing Christian was more elongated than most transfers. I understand that many people will have questions about the process.
‘In order to respect Christian’s medical confidentiality, we won’t be going into any details. Brentford fans can rest assured that we have undertaken significant due diligence to ensure that Christian is in the best possible shape to return to competitive football.
‘Now Christian has made the decision to sign for Brentford, all parties want to focus fully on football.
‘We are sure that Christian will make a big impact at Brentford and on the Premier League between now and the end of the season.’
