Gary Lineker has described Christian Eriksen’s distressing collapse during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 match against Finland as ‘truly awful’ and ‘so distressing’. The 29-year-old fell to the floor in the closing stages of the first half before medical staff were spotted attempting to resuscitate the former Tottenham midfielder on the turf.

The Group B clash was promptly suspended as Eriksen continued to receive emergency medical treatment.

No further updates have been provided on the Denmark playmaker’s condition as of yet.

Lineker, who was leading BBC One’s coverage of the fixture, expressed his concern after television cameras cut back to the studio in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

“Let’s hope that Christian pulls through, it is so distressing,” he said.

Moments before, the former England striker had tweeted: “Goodness me, this looks truly awful.”
