CHRIS SUTTON: Phil Foden should walk into the England squad

CHRIS SUTTON: Phil Foden looks a shoo-in for England at the Euros this summer after his fabulous display for City against Liverpool… the midfielder is starting to justify his nickname as ‘the Stockport Iniesta’

  • Pep Guardiola labelled Phil Foden as the ‘most talented player’ he’d ever seen
  • Foden will walk in Gareth Southgate’s starting line up for this summer’s Euros
  • City midfielder has something special about him just like Paul Gascoigne

A fair few people sniffed at Pep Guardiola’s words about Phil Foden in 2019 when he said this kid from Stockport is the ‘most talented player’ he has ever seen.

I was probably guilty of that myself. This is a guy who has managed Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, and David Silva. I thought, ‘Come on, Pep, you’re having a laugh, right?’

Perhaps he was on to something. Foden is only 20 and we are so lucky he is English. He will walk into Gareth Southgate’s XI for the Euros at this rate.

Phil Foden was on the scoresheet as Manchester City romped to a 4-1 win at Liverpool

He’s starting to justify that ‘Stockport Iniesta’ name and we have to applaud Guardiola’s handling of his development. I felt he should have been sent on loan instead of sitting on the bench, but he has timed it perfectly.

I remember watching Norwich play Tottenham in 1989 and being taken aback by a chap called Paul Gascoigne.

It was like he was playing in his back garden. It stuck with me how different he was. That is how it feels watching Foden now.

They aren’t like-for-like but Gazza had that special something about him and so does Foden

Foden has been tipped to star for England at the European Championships this summer
