Chris Sutton believes Nottingham Forest and their manager Steve Cooper will be ‘absolutely killed’ if the club sell star man Brennan Johnson to Tottenham.
Spurs are preparing to launch a £50million bid for the Wales international, 22, who would prefer to sign for the north London club over other suitors Chelsea and West Ham.
Forest have already rejected a number of offers up to £35m from Brentford for Johnson and will likely see their resolve tested ahead of next week’s transfer deadline.
But Mail Sport columist and former Premier League striker Sutton fears Forest could do themselves more harm than good by taking the cash now for a player who supplied 10 goals and three assists last season.
‘Well, it’s going to absolutely kill Nottingham Forest and Steve Cooper,’ Sutton told Mail Sport’s It’s All Coming Up podcast.

‘He can’t be in a hurry to get rid of Brennan Johnson, however much money Nottingham Forest get. I get why Ange Postecoglou would be in for Brennan Johnson.
‘I think that, you know, we’ve sort of had a look at the Tottenham team in the first couple of games. You can see the progress Postecoglou has made, but it’s not really his team.
‘As such, he’s inherited a large part of that squad and he will want to bring his own players in, which fit his way of playing.
‘It’s healthy, it was interesting, the forward line which he had there, and in terms of the different attributes he likes across the forward line.
‘Some of them were really good athletes, that movement in behind, which I think he would utilise Brennan Johnson for off the wide areas.
‘[James] Maddison on the half turn, feeding and Brennan Johnson, I think that would fit Tottenham’s style of play. He’s young, he’s versatile, can play a number of positions.

‘Forest are still think they’re going to have a fight on their hands in the Premier League so losing arguably your best player, that’s a bit of a no-no, isn’t it?’
Mail Sport’s football editor Ian Ladyman agreed, saying that losing Johnson would ‘rip the heart and soul out of Steve Cooper’s team.’
Forest opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal but recovered to defeat Sheffield United by the same scoreline on Friday night.
Cooper’s side make the trip to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United this Saturday.
