Chris Sutton believes that Chelsea’s struggles in front have become a ‘concern’.
Graham Potter’s side were unable to find the net on Sunday as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal.
Chelsea have scored just twice in their last four league games. They have scored 17 times overall in the league, which is significantly fewer than Arsenal’s 31 and Manchester City’s 39.
Chris Sutton says the lack of goals from Graham Potter’s Chelsea is becoming a concern
Former Chelsea player Sutton was also concerned about Potter’s post-match interview in which he compared his team to Arsenal’s current situation.
Sutton told Stadium Astro: ‘It’s a massive worry. What would also concern me is Graham Potter’s post-match interview when he was comparing Chelsea to Arsenal and where Arsenal are at.
‘Chelsea finished above Arsenal last season so he should be doing better with the players he has at his disposal. I know there are injuries but the issue he has is expectations.
Sutton feels Potter should focus on his own team instead of making comparisons with Arsenal
‘They are expected to always compete for the title. They were miles off it against Arsenal but it’s too simplistic to just say “Arsenal are better than us right now and their manager [Mikel Arteta] has had time”.
Sutton stressed that Chelsea needed to show more against Arsenal and Potter will now have to demonstrate that his team can be more competitive.
Sutton said: ‘Potter will get time I think but he needs to start winning games and showing that Chelsea can be far more competitive.
‘It’s okay to lose a game but to not lay a glove on Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea owners and fans will demand more than that.’
Speaking after the game Potter referenced Chelsea’s struggles in the final third.
He said: ‘We played against a team in a really good moment, a confident team and you can see the points they have so credit to them.
‘The boys gave everything, it was huffing and puffing but missed that last bit. The goal was disappointing, but overall they deserved it.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struggled as Chelsea suffered a defeat to Arsenal on Sunday
‘Arsenal are in a good moment and have been working together for a long time with a good understanding of what they want to do.’
The defeat to Arsenal left Chelsea in seventh place in the Premier League, 13 points adrift of Arsenal.
Potter has overseen seven wins, three draws and two defeats during his 12 matches in charge of Chelsea so far.
The Chelsea boss will have been concerned by the performance of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on Sunday, with the striker failing to make much of an impact against his former club Arsenal.
Chelsea face Manchester City away on Wednesday in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
