Chelsea’s Twitter praises Soucek’s ‘great save’ after stonewall penalty ignored

Chelsea had a cheeky dig at Premier League referee Craig Pawson and the VAR team by praising Tomas Soucek for his “great save”.

Graham Potter’s side’s frustrations continued when they were held to a 1-1 draw against West Ham. Despite a very bright start which saw Joao Felix score his first goal, the Blues’ struggles in front of goal continued.

While the draw was arguably a fair result, Chelsea were denied what appeared to be a stonewall penalty when Conor Gallagher’s shot struck Soucek’s arm in the penalty area. After their appeals were waved off, the Blues’ social media team had a very cheeky dig of their own.

They tweeted, “Soucek makes a great save from Conor Gallagher” after the incident was waved off without the VAR team instructing Pawson to go to the monitor. Potter was certainly not laughing after the game, when asked about the incident.

While the tone of his voice did not change too much, it was very easy to see he was very frustrated by the decision. "Looks it,” Potter said when asked about the penalty.

“These are the little things you need to go in your favour. They aren't, that's life, we have to keep working." Former Premier League official Peter Walton was stunned when the Blues were not awarded a penalty.

“Well when Soucek goes down there, you can clearly see his arm go down,” Walton said on BT Sports. “Is his arm down there to prevent him from hitting the ground or is his arm there to block the ball?

“My opinion is if it hasn’t been given he’s got away with it, I think that’s a penalty kick.” The result means the Blues have drawn their last three Premier League matches.

The draw moves Chelsea into ninth position, but they will drop down to 10th if Liverpool beat Everton on Monday. The Blues will hope their struggles in front of goal and VAR woes do not follow them to Germany, when they face Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16.
