Chelsea’s reasons for rejecting Tuchel come to light amid fresh links with Blues

Chelsea were reportedly warned against appointing Thomas Tuchel as manager a number of seasons ago as they weighed up replacing Antonio Conte.

Tuchel was tipped to take the Stamford Bridge hot seat in 2017 after his sacking as Borussia Dortmund boss.

Blues chiefs were concerned then-manager Conte would leave his role at the end of the 2016/17 season despite him leading the club to the Premier League title.

And managers including Tuchel and Massimiliano Allegri quickly staked their claims to take over in west London.

But Chelsea were fired a warning that Tuchel might prove just as troublesome as Conte or former boss Jose Mourinho, according to the Daily Telegraph .

The revelation comes as Tuchel is once again linked with the Chelsea job, with the club's hierarchy exploring the possibility of replacing Frank Lampard.

The Blues are on a dismal run of four defeats in their last six Premier League games, with Tuchel, Allegri and Brendan Rodgers among the host of managers mooted to replace Lampard.

Tuchel was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain on Christmas Eve and is alleged to have fallen out with numerous players and members of staff at both Dortmund and the Ligue 1 club.

Taking note of the warning they received, Chelsea stuck by Conte for the 2017/18 season and he brought the club FA Cup glory.

But the Italian endured a fractious relationship with club chiefs and was dismissed at the end of the campaign, with Maurizio Sarri brought in to replace him.

Sarri's lone season as Chelsea boss did little to remedy the relationship between manager and board, but his successor – club legend Frank Lampard – has helped repair the schism.

Nonetheless, Chelsea face a decision over how much time to give Lampard to turn his side's form around before replacing him.

Whether they will pass over Tuchel – who had a formidable 74.8 per cent win rate at PSG – to maintain harmony between manager and board remains to be seen.
