Chelsea are prepared to pay Romelu Lukaku in the region of £250,000-a-week, according to reports. Thomas Tuchel is eager to land the Inter Milan striker. And the Blues, it seems, are willing to up his pay as they look to bring him to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Chelsea want a new striker, having already sold Olivier Giroud and made plans to jettison Tammy Abraham.

They’d initially hoped to secure the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund but, with the Bundesliga giants in no mood to see, are now looking elsewhere.

They’ve seen a bid for Lukaku rejected so far but that hasn’t deterred Chelsea, who are still hoping to add the Belgium international to their squad.

And Eurosport’s Dean Jones, speaking on The Football Terrace podcast, has claimed Tuchel’s team are prepared to pay Lukaku more money than he was on at Manchester United in order to secure his signature.

“When Chelsea first touched base with Lukaku about what they’d be offering, Man City were kind of in the conversation as well,” he said.

“They’d actually offered more money to Lukaku in terms of an initial financial payment, what his wages would be and so on.

“And so, Chelsea weren’t really in the same ballpark. But, since then, things have changed.

“Chelsea have increased their offer, they’re now willing to pay Lukaku not just more than he’s on at Inter Milan but more than he earned at Manchester United.

“He took a pay cut to go to Inter Milan, at United he was on around £200,000-a-week.

“He’ll be getting more than that if he goes to Chelsea, probably closer to £250,000-a-week from what I’m told.

“This is advancing, this story is moving all the time. Yesterday I took so many calls on it because suddenly it became a live story.”

Lukaku previously joined Chelsea from Anderlecht back in the summer transfer window of 2011.

But he struggled during his time in the capital, failing to score from 15 appearances for the Premier League side.

Lukaku then joined Everton after successful loan spells at both Goodison Park and West Brom, rebuilding his career in the process.

And he then joined Manchester United, turning down a move to Chelsea in 2017 in favour of playing under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

Lukaku scored 28 goals in his first season with the Red Devils but struggled in his second campaign, eventually falling out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And he’s been an overwhelming hit at Inter Milan ever since leaving, propelling the club to Scudetto glory last term.

Speaking in June, when Euro 2020 was on, Peter Crouch urged Lukaku to return to England with Chelsea.

He told Paddy Power: “Romelu Lukaku has to be a target for Premier League clubs, without a doubt.

“Look at the money you’d have to spend to get Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe or even Harry Kane. It would cost a lot less to get Lukaku, yet he’s a banker for Premier League goals.

“He gets better every season and I wouldn’t bet against him winning the Euros Golden Boot now. Belgium are a top side and he’s going to get more goals.

“The obvious English destination is Chelsea, though. He’d fit in there. They’ve got pace, which suits him, willing runners, and they’d have an abundance of ability around him.

“He’s been at Chelsea before and I think he’s got something to prove there. I could see him being a good fit under Thomas Tuchel.

“Similarly, if Chelsea sign Erling Haaland, they are title contenders without a doubt. They’ve got a squad capable of a title challenge and will have confidence after winning the Champions League.

“If they get Haaland, they’re 100% in it. It’s going to be a fascinating season to see if anyone can topple Manchester City.”
