Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez announcement called ‘painful to watch’ and ‘so cringe’

Chelsea have been slammed for making the "worse announcement video ever" to reveal Enzo Fernandez's squad number.

Fernandez was officially unveiled at the Blues' Cobham training ground on Wednesday (February 1) after completing a British record transfer worth £107million from Benfica on Deadline Day. The Stamford Bridge faithful lauded their club for getting it over the line after a month of negotiating.

But they weren't so happy with their media team when they adapted the TikTok trend of offering people money or the chance to double it for the next person. Instead of cash, a staff member offered Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Conor Gallagher "the number 1.25 shirt".

After the trio "doubled it", Reece James was offered "the number 2.5 shirt". He gave the same response before Fernandez took the No. 5 strip.

The clip went down like a lead balloon. One supporter replied: "This is the worst player reveal I’ve ever seen." One even went so far as to say: "One of the worst things I’ve ever seen."

"This is the cringiest thing I've ever seen," echoed another. One person said: "That’s painful to watch. So many millions being spunked and this is what they come up with…"

One joked: "Surprised they had any numbers left." While another quipped: "The entire media and communications team was sacked to meet the release clause. It’s actually Todd Boehly behind the camera."

"Probably the worse announcement video ever," argued one, and another commented: "One of the worst announcement videos for a record signing I have seen."

Chelsea's media team did rescue it somewhat with a personalised song in Spanish for Fernandez's full announcement video, which fans lapped up online.

The Argentina World Cup winner has signed an eight-and-a-half year contract with the Blues, capping off a very successful January transfer window which saw a total of eight new faces join.

Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana were also recruited, while Joao Felix arrived on loan.
