Chelsea Women boss Emma Hayes backs decision to sack Graham Potter
Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes “supports” the decision from the club’s board to sack Graham Potter. The 46-year-old also admits she is “upset” to see the former Brighton boss leave.
Potter was sacked on Sunday evening, just over 24 hours after the 2-0 home loss to Aston Villa. Chelsea had dropped to 11th in the Premier League table, 12 points off the top four places.
Potter was only in charge at Stamford Bridge for seven months, having replaced the sacked Thomas Tuchel in September. After a run of just one win in 11 matches at the start of 2023, he oversaw a slight upturn in results.
However, a late draw at home to Everton before the international break, followed by Saturday’s defeat to Villa proved to be the final straw for owner Todd Boehly. Hayes admits she is always gutted to see a manager lose their job.

But she says she supports the decision from Boehly if he feels a change of direction is needed. Hayes told Sky Sports: “Obviously, I’m upset for Graham and the club too, I know everybody wanted to make it work.
“But if the owners feel they have to go in another direction, of course as always I support their decision. I wish Graham the best and know with 10 games left to play in the Premier League, I’m sure the boys will do everything to get us back on track.”
“I’m a manager and I’m always gutted when managers lose their jobs. He’s a top person and someone that you know, I’m disappointed and I haven’t really quite digested it yet, having just heard the news.”

Former Brighton captain Bruno Saltor has been placed in interim charge at Chelsea after following Potter to the club earlier this season. Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali shared a joint statement on the decision to sack Potter.
It read: “On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea. We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person.
“He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity, and we are all disappointed in this outcome. Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.
“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead. We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high.”
