Chelsea have been told to copy the transfer policies of Arsenal and Manchester United, after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Thursday. The Blues have not been afraid to splash the cash under co-owner and acting sporting director Todd Boehly, and have continued to spend in the January transfer window.
Youngsters David Datro Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have joined this month from Genk and Monaco respectively, with an eye on the future as Christopher Nkunku is also set to move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka and Gabriel Slonina also joined in the summer as signings under the age of 22, while they are also attempting to sign Brazilian starlet Andrey Santos alongside Mykhaylo Mudryk and the World Cup’s young player of the tournament Enzo Fernandez.
Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink explained that the number of youngsters coming into the club is a “worry” and more established players should also be bought. “That is the intent of the new owners, they want young,” Hasselbaink told Sky Sports. “They want young and exciting, the best young players, because they’re looking to the future.

“But in the meantime, my worry is you also need players who are going to come in and make the team better straight away. That can wear the shirt and can handle the shirt, and that’s going to win games.
“I don’t think that mentality is going to change overnight because they have been spoiled for the last 20 years, where they have won so many trophies. They’re going to expect that still, so to get that balance right you need to have both, you cannot only buy young players and wait for the future.”

The Dutchman pointed to two clubs in Arsenal and United that have found the right balance in their transfer dealings, signing a mixture of youth and experience. “What I mean is players who have got Premier League experience,” Hasselbaink added.
“Players who have won medals. That’s what I mean, who can go into the team straight away and make the team better. What Arsenal have done with [Gabriel] Jesus and [Oleksandr] Zinchenko, Man United with Casemiro, they make a difference and that’s what needs to happen – two or three players.”
Mikel Arteta opted to look at his former employers to sign Jesus and Zinchenko, adding proven Premier League quality to his youthful side that has since gone on to top the table. United added five-time Champions League winner Casemiro alongside Christian Eriksen to Erik ten Hag’s midfield, and the duo have revitalised the team at Old Trafford, who are suddenly involved in the title race after three consecutive wins without conceding following the World Cup break.
