The Premier League’s transfer window has only just closed, although there are already transfer headaches at Chelsea if reports are to be believed.

The European champions brought in Romelu Lukaku for a club-record transfer fee in early August, and Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez joined him on deadline day.

And with no notable departures bar Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori, Chelsea’s first XI has been considerably strengthened when you take into consideration the additions to their attacking prowess.

However, the key to success is to never rest up, with Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia already looking ahead to the January transfer window.

One problem will be at the forefront of her list, however – with defender Antonio Rudiger still continuing to stall over a new deal.

The Blues have reportedly offered the German a deal of £140,000 per week after excelling under fellow countryman Thomas Tuchel since his arrival in January 2020.

With a deal for Rudiger running out in June 2022, the west London club have little time to resolve the situation.

And with Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Juventus all reportedly interested and able to offer him a pre-contract in January, Granovskaia will have her work cut out to agree a new deal.

A report by the Telegraph suggests that Rudiger currently brings in £100,000 per week but will be looking to double that if he was to move abroad.

And with the defender wanting a contract to match Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and N’Golo Kante’s wages he may be waiting a while longer to earn the same as Tuchel’s star players.

The defender has already spoken out about his contract renewal after Chelsea won the Champions League.

“For now, talks have begun and we will see what time brings,” Rudiger said in August.

But whether he will sign a new deal remains to be seen.

Rudiger has become a fan favourite, conceding just one Premier League goal all season as he has played every minute.

But with the German likely to be picking up one last payday as he approaches his thirties, he will have to choose his next move very carefully.

And Granovskaia must work out whether Rudiger is as valuable to Chelsea as the likes of Lukaku and Kante or whether they can afford to lose him for nothing in 2022.
