Chelsea ‘tried to sign PSG defender Marquinhos in the summer and were ready to offer £85m’ in a bid to reunite him with Thiago Silva… but both the player and French giants rejected any deal with the Premier League side

  • Thomas Tuchel was keen to bring a centre back to the club during the summer
  • Marquinhos wanted to stay in Paris after the club’s activity in the transfer market
  • Chelsea also attempted to bring French defender Jules Kounde to West London
  • The Champions League holders have only conceded one league goal this season

Chelsea reportedly tried to bring Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos to Stamford Bridge this summer and were willing to offer up to £85million to secure his signature.

The Brazilian centre back worked under Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel during the manager’s time in Paris and he was keen to bring the player to the Premier League.

The west London club were desperately looking to bring in a defender this summer and were also strongly linked with Sevilla’s Jules Kounde.

However French outlet RMC Sport claim Tuchel wanted to reunite Marquinhos with his Brazilian team-mate and former PSG defensive partner Thiago Silva.

Even though the Champions League winners were willing to pay £85m for the player, both PSG and Marquinhos rejected Chelsea’s approach.

The Brazilian wanted to stay in the french capital after seeing PSG recruit well in the transfer market. They signed Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos, Achraf Hakimi and Georginio Wijnaldum.

From the club’s perspective, Mauricio Pochettino views Marquinhos as a vital member of the starting eleven due to his consistently high level performances in recent seasons and therefore opted to keep the player.

Ultimately, Chelsea were unable to make any defensive reinforcements during the transfer window yet their failure to land a new player hasn’t seemed to impact their ability to keep clean sheets.

Since the start of the season, they have only conceded one goal in five Premier League games.

Thiago Silva was one of Chelsea’s standout performers during their victory over Tottenham on Sunday after scoring the opening goal and helping the team keep another clean sheet.

Chelsea are looking to continue their good start to the season this week as they take on Aston Villa in the Caraboa Cup and title rivals Manchester City in a Premier League clash on Saturday.
