Chelsea are not giving up the fight to sign Jules Kounde just yet despite the transfer window closing. The Blues were the favourites to snap up the highly-rated Frenchman over the summer but Sevilla changed their asking price to leave the deal up in the air.
Chelsea may not have signed Kounde in the summer but they will revisit a transfer in January.
It comes after talks between the club and Sevilla broke down at the last minute when the Spanish team demanded more money from the deal.
A verbal agreement had been reached with the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium outfit for a fee of around £52m.
Following the sale of Kurt Zouma, though, Sevilla moved the goalposts and demanded a further £13m – which would have triggered Kounde’s release clause.
Chelsea refused to come to an agreement after being stunned by their late request.
Saul Niguez was brought in on loan from Atletico Madrid but there would be no Kounde, despite being heavily linked all summer.
It opens the door to other clubs but the Blues remain calm over the situation and will revisit an approach in January when the winter window opens, according to the Guardian.
Real Madrid, Tottenham and Manchester United have all been linked with the Frenchman.
But Sevilla chief Monchi insisted it was only Chelsea that Kounde had his sights set on.
“There’s been a lot of talk about moves made for Jules, the majority of which were rejected by the player,” he said.
“If there was one club he liked the look of, it was Chelsea.”
Kounde asked to be left out of the squad to face Elche at the weekend and it remains to be seen how the 22-year-old will react to the news that his dream move to Stamford Bridge had been scuppered.
