Chelsea to pay Brighton huge Graham Potter sum double Aubameyang transfer fee

Chelsea will reportedly have to fork out to Brighton a sum double of what they paid to Barcelona for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as they wrap up the appointment of Graham Potter.

Following the sacking of Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday, the Blues have moved quick and wrapped up the signing of highly-rated Potter and his coaching staff.

The group have been prised away from the Seagulls – but it has come at a pretty penny.

BBC Sport report that Chelsea have had to pay the south coast Premier League side £21million in compensation for Potter and his staff of coaches.

The fee is actually double what they paid Barca for the services of Aubameyang this window, with the Gabonese striker coming in for £10.3 million.

Upon hearing the news, some fans on social media have had their say, touching mainly on the huge amount of money that the Blues have decided to depart with in order to land the head coach.

One commented: “My dear like I said! On God this gamble had better pay off!! I can painfully accept the reality Tuchel is gone, but going from Tuchel to Graham Potter is up there as one of the biggest downgrades in football history. I pray this gamble pays off.”

Another wrote: “People saying "ridiculous" but a manager is the most important person at a club. If Potter is given time & lives up to expectations of becoming a world-class manager, it will look a bargain. And certainly a much better use of money than f**king £97m on another Lukaku.”

A third stated: “Tuchel’s compensation = £13M. Brighton’s compensation = £21M. So Todd Boehly has spent £34M on compensations alone after spending £270M to back a manager he just sacked. I hope Todd Boehly knows what he's doing at Chelsea.”

Indeed, Potter was announced as the manager of Chelsea ahead of their Premier League fixture with Fulham, penning a five-year deal with the Blues.

Joining him will be assistant Billy Reid, first-team coaches Bjorn Hamberg and Bruno, goalkeeping coach Ben Roberts and assistant head of recruitment Kyle Macaulay.

Meanwhile, Aubameyang has returned to England after a short spell with Barcelona. The signing of Robert Lewandowski saw his opportunities at the La Liga side dry up and so made the move.
