Chelsea to increase dressing room size after splurging £600m on 17 new signings

Chelsea are set to increase the size of their changing room after splurging £300m last month adding to their star-studded roster.

The west London outfit brought in eight new players during the winter window, taking their overall outlay to over £600m on 17 new faces.

Stamford Bridge boss Graham Potter was even been forced to leave players out of his Champions League squad because he now has 33 to call upon.

And it’s claimed to be getting a bit of a squeeze in their plush home dressing room too.

Chelsea expanded the away dressing room last month after receiving complaints it was too small for visitors’ requirements. They knocked down a wall and added extra square footage by claiming back some of the press room.

And despite the Blues already having a bigger, more luxurious suite space for their stars to get stripped for action in, players are said to be feeling the squeeze.

A club insider said: "Unfortunately, the dressing rooms are situated under the old East Stand, built in the 1970s, so it has made it difficult to expand them to cater for todays larger squads.

"It’s fair to say the home changing room is a lot busier these days and players not in the matchday squad are having to wait outside with so much going on. Before January it wasn’t too bad but it’s becoming very crowded in there.

"The tunnel at Stamford Bridge has low ceilings and when you factor the away team also being across the way and their staff, there’s little elbow room.”

Chelsea paid out a British record £107m last month to recruit Argentina’s World Cup winning midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica.

That was on top of the £88m they also forked out for Ukraine winger Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Chelsea source added: "Our new owners want the best of everything. If they can find the extra space, they will. It’s a new squad with people still getting to know each, although maybe a little more than anyone anticipated!"
