Chelsea to hire ex-Spurs and Southampton transfer guru Paul Mitchell

Chelsea ‘want to bring in former Tottenham director of football Paul Mitchell’ following a £600m spend under Todd Boehly… with the Blues seeing him as ‘an ideal appointment due to his friendship with incoming boss Mauricio Pochettino’

  • Mitchell has experience with Monaco, RB Leipzig, Tottenham and Southampton
  • The 41-year-old has a solid working relationship with Mauricio Pochettino
  • Man United and Newcastle have both been close to hiring Mitchell in the past

Chelsea are planning on hiring transfer ‘guru’ Paul Mitchell in preparation for a mass overhaul of their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Mitchell is an expert in the field of recruitment and has experience working with clubs at various levels of the English pyramid as well as with a host of clubs across Europe’s top flights.

Having called a premature end to his playing career through injury at the age of 27, Mitchell was appointed as MK Dons’ first ever head of recruitment, where he worked closely with Dele Alli in the early stages of his career.

In January 2012, Mitchell switched allegiances to join then-Championship side Southampton as the Saints secured promotion to the top flight at the end of that season.

Soon-to-be Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino was appointed by Southampton in January 2013, where he and Mitchell developed a strong working relationship.

Chelsea are reportedly hoping to hire transfer expert Paul Mitchell to help clear out the squad

Mitchell has worked with prospective Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino on two occasions

The 41-year-old was credited with bringing the likes of Son Heung-min and Dele Alli to Spurs

Mitchell followed Pochettino when he moved to Tottenham in 2014 and was credited with bringing the likes of Alli, Son Heung-min, Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld to the club.

After a falling out with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, Mitchell eventually left North London and joined RB Leipzig in 2018, where he signed Nordi Mukiele and Matheus Cunha as well as bringing Emile Smith Rowe in on loan.

In June 2020, Mitchell moved to France and began working for Monaco in Ligue 1, his most recent job to date.

At various points, Mitchell had been tipped to join Manchester United under Ralf Ragnick and in 2021, reportedly offered his services to Newcastle after their Saudi-backed takeover.

Now, Mitchell is tipped to reunite with Pochettino at Stamford Bridge for a third spell working together.

With Chelsea’s squad bursting at the seems, the club have another busy transfer window ahead as they look to part ways with a number of senior players.

Despite having spent well over £600m over the last two windows, Chelsea currently find themselves in 12th place in the Premier League table.

Chelsea will be hoping that Mitchell will be able to utilise his extensive list of contacts across Europe to help find new homes for some of their unwanted first team players.
