Chelsea need to sign their own Ruben Dias to become Premier League title contenders next season, according to former Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin. Manchester City star Dias is among the favourites to win the PFA Player of the Year award this season. The Portugal international has had a stunning first campaign at City following his £65million arrival from Benfica.

Chelsea have had an exemplary defensive record under Thomas Tuchel since the German replaced Frank Lampard as head coach in January.

Tuchel has led the Blues into the Champions League qualification places and can go a long way to securing a top-four spot if they beat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge tonight (8.15pm).

Chelsea beat City 2-1 at the Etihad at the weekend to delay their title coronation until Tuesday, where Manchester United’s loss to Leicester ensured Pep Guardiola’s side would finish top for the third time in four seasons.

However, despite the huge upturn in form under Tuchel, Dublin still believes at least one defender needs to be brought to the club.

“Oh yeah they do, yeah they do. One definitely,” Dublin told Premier League Productions.

“They could with a Dias, that’s what they could do with, a Dias. Or maybe even two of them to be honest with you.”

Tuchel has Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Kurt Zouma and Cesar Azpilicueta as his centre-back options.

Fikayo Tomori is also out on loan at AC Milan, with the Italian side having the option to make the move permanent for £25million in the summer.

Former West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison says the future of Tomori will determine whether Tuchel looks to sign a defender.

Hutchison said: “It depends how they see Tomori on loan at AC Milan, it depends how they see him. He scored against Juve [on Sunday].

“They’ve still got three very good centre-halves, Tomori fourth. Zouma’s fighting for a position as well.

“So it depends on what they want and what they’re going to get.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher named Dias as his player of the season on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme this week.

“He’s come in now and been the best defender in the league and for me, the best player,” Carragher said.

“City have not won this league by the typical Pep way. Yes, they always score the most goals and they normally have a great defensive record, to be fair, when you look at Pep’s time at any club, but last season, defensively they were not as good as they usually were.

“He’s like [Carles] Puyol, the amount of blocks he made in the Champions League game last week.”
