Chelsea are interested in making a move for Lille striker Jonathan David, according to reports.

The Canadian forward, 22, has starred at Lille since joining from Gent in 2020, netting 41 goals in 107 appearances.

David is also set to be a key man for Canada at the World Cup next month, with the Maple Leafs featuring at the tournament for the first time since 1986.

Chelse are reportedly interested in making a January move for Lille striker Jonathan David

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux, Graham Potter’s side are now planning to make a January move for David to build on the positive start for the Blues since the Englishman took over.

Chelsea are unbeaten in six games since Potter arrived at the club and have moved up to fourth place in the Premier League.

And David is being targeted by the Blues as they look to find a younger alternative to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, with the Canadian valued at between £38-46m.

This is despite Aubameyang’s promising start, with the Gabonese forward having scored three times in just six appearances for the west London club so far.

He only joined the club in the summer from Barcelona, but at the age of 33, the former Arsenal skipper is not seen as a long-term option for Potter’s side.

His disappointing performance in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday is also said to have had an impact on the proposed move for David.

David has been in fine form for Lille so far this season, scoring nine goals and laying on two assists in just 11 league games.

The forward is currently the joint top scorer in Ligue 1, level with PSG star Neymar, and one ahead of Kylian Mbappe.

He has also scored 20 goals in 30 appearances for his country, and his deal with the French club runs until 2025.

David has previously been linked with Arsenal, and the Gunners were reportedly very keen on signing the Canadian, with technical director Edu even meeting the player’s agent at the end of last year, before Mikel Arteta’s side opted to sign Gabriel Jesus instead.

Chelsea would likely face competition from Arsenal in their move for David, with the striker previously admitting his admiration for Gunners legend Thierry Henry, while he also regularly watched Arsene Wenger’s side during the early 2000s.

Potter’s side are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to west London rivals Brentford as they go in search of their fifth successive Premier League win.
