Chelsea target Vincent Kompany given clear advice on ditching Burnley

Lampard insists Chelsea 'will be back' after Champions League exit

Vincent Kompany has been advised to take things slowly in his managerial career by former Manchester City team-mate Kolo Toure, amid reported interest from Chelsea. The Belgian has earned new admirers this season after guiding Burnley back to the Premier League and transforming their playing style in the process.

Kompany began his transition from a distinguished playing career to life in the dugout in 2019, when he became player-manager at Anderlecht. He hung up his boots for good a few months later and spent three years in Belgium, banking enough credit to be trusted with Burnley’s promotion push.

The 37-year-old had big shoes to fill following a productive 10-year spell in charge for Sean Dyche, who was relieved of his duties towards the back end of last season. And Kompany has done so with distinction as the free-flowing Clarets sit top of the Championship, having lost only three of their 43 league games this term.

Chelsea have placed Frank Lampard in temporary charge until the end of the campaign, but reports indicate that Kompany has made their final managerial shortlist due to his exploits at Turf Moor.

Toure, who spent four seasons alongside Kompany at the Etihad Stadium, has advised his former team-mate to think carefully before jumping the gun, while acknowledging that even a failed move can produce positives. “Vincent needs to go step by step as a manager,” The Ivorian told media, including Express Sport.

“Sometimes you can gamble and take a job that’s quite big, but you never lose really, because you’re going to learn. If you take a big job and it works – great. If it doesn’t then you will learn. It’s always good to go step by step and Vincent is very intelligent, he knows what he needs [to do], definitely.

“He’s quick on it, to be honest, with what he’s achieving. That surprised me, honestly. Because to be able to do what he did at Anderlecht, to come and do it straight away in the Championship – which is a tough league – he has Burnley which is a good squad, but what he has done has surprised me.

“That shows the quality of the boy. It shows how intelligent he is because this guy is very intelligent. He’s been preparing himself very well, as well. Having the Anderlecht job helped him a lot to be successful now. I’m not surprised that he’s a good manager, but I’m surprised that he has achieved what he has achieved so quickly.”

While senior figures at Stamford Bridge are said to be similarly impressed by Kompany, he has reportedly told his backroom staff that he intends to remain at Burnley as they prepare to return to the Premier League.

The ex-Man City star may have just about fallen short regardless amid intensifying rumours that Mauricio Pochettino will be appointed in west London, following alleged concerns over Kompany’s lack of experience in the dugout.
