Chelsea striker Aubameyang nears agreement to join Saudi league

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is ‘close to an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to join one of their four clubs’, bringing an end to the striker’s disaster spell with Chelsea

  • Aubameyang could be the latest player to join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia
  • The Chelsea striker reportedly wouldn’t be against another season in Europe
  • He joins one of fifteen players facing uncertain futures at the Blues this summer

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the next high-profile footballer being targeted by the Saudi Arabian league – according to reports – with the Chelsea forward facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.

With one year left on his contract French outlet Sports Zone have reported Aubameyang ‘wouldn’t be against a final season in Europe’, but no club has yet stepped forward to sign him.

The Gabon international is reportedly close to finalising an agreement with the Saudi Private Investment Fund to join one of their four Saudi Arabian clubs.

The 33-year-old striker joined Chelsea from Barcelona in September and has had an underwhelming season, making just five starts in the Premier League and scoring once.

Aubameyang could join Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante, as well as Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Sergio Busquets as the Saudi Arabian Pro League continue to entice some of the world’s largest footballing names.

Aubameyang was dropped from Graham Potter’s Champions League knockout squad

Aubameyang’s future at Chelsea seemed doomed from the outset when his reunion with former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel was cut short by the abrupt firing of the German coach in the opening weeks of the season.

Tuchel, who had led the blues to their second Champions League trophy only 16 months prior, had brought in Aubameyang from the Spanish giants for £10million, with a swap for Marcos Alonso included in the deal.

The two had worked together for two years at Dortmund, but their time together in south-west London lasted just a week.

The chemistry between the former Arsenal striker and Tuchel’s replacement Graham Potter wasn’t to be, and Aubameyang was eventually left out of Potter’s Champions League knockout squad.

This was despite Chelsea struggling for goalscorers and Aubameyang bagging two goals during the group stages against AC Milan, with one in each leg.

Incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to significantly reduce Chelsea’s bloated squad, and Aubameyang could be one of fifteen players whose future is in doubt.

Fellow Chelsea player Kante is close to joining Al Ittihad, where he will join compatriot Karim Benzema who has recently signed a three-year contract worth £258million.

Saudi club Al-Alhi has also expressed an interest in Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez.
