Returning World Cup stars Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling, Conor Gallagher and Thiago Silva have been filmed in Chelsea training for the first time since they were knocked out of the tournament.
Mount, Sterling and Gallagher were eliminated last Saturday by reigning world champions France while Silva’s World Cup dreams were ended by Croatia the Friday night prior.
Returning to Cobham, Mount was all smiles as he walked out onto the training pitches alongside youth players Eddie Beach and Charlie Webster, seemingly having put the disappointment of last week to bed.
Mason Mount returned to Chelsea training – leading two youth team players out to warm up
Mount was the player brought down by Theo Hernandez to give England – and Harry Kane – the chance to equalise after Olivier Giroud had restored France’s lead. The Tottenham forward, however, blazed his effort over the bar.
Sterling, who was a substitute in the quarter-final defeat, was filmed doing some on-the-ball work. It remains to be seen what Sterling’s involvement will be like for Chelsea in the immediate weeks following his return after he briefly had to return back to London mid-World Cup following a break-in at his Surrey home.
Gallagher, who did not play a minute in Qatar, was also filmed doing some ball work as he looks to get back up to speed ahead of the Premier League’s return. Chelsea’s month-long hiatus ends with the visit of Bournemouth on December 27.
Raheem Sterling put the disappointment of England’s exit behind him as he underwent some technical ball work
Meanwhile, Silva sought to put the heartache of Brazil’s shock World Cup exit behind him by returning to Chelsea training.
The centre-back was part of Tite’s side that went into the tournament as market favourites but failed to live up to that billing as they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage.
Potter last week said that eliminated players would be allowed some time to recover with their friends and family before joining back up with the squad.
Thiago Silva – who was part of Brazil’s agonising penalty defeat to Croatia – was also filmed
Conor Gallagher did not play a minute in Qatar and as such will be looking to get himself up to speed ahead of the Premier League’s return
‘They’ll report back when we return,’ he said. ‘It’s important after the disappointment of being knocked out that there’s time to psychologically get their heads straight and have a bit of time with their family and friends.’
‘Then they can come back refreshed, we’ve given the players some time to have a break and to be ready for a tough long second part of the season. They’ll be returning next week and we’re looking forward to seeing everybody,’ he added.
Chelsea used their mid-season break to travel to Abu Dhabi, where they played Aston Villa in a friendly last Sunday.
Players not involved at the World Cup, such as Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Ruben Loftus-Cheek all travelled as part of a 25-man touring party.
