Chelsea star Thiago Silva’s reaction to Mount Man Utd transfer speaks volumes

Chelsea confirm Mauricio Pochettino as new boss

Chelsea star Thiago Silva had a telling reaction to hearing that Mason Mount has agreed personal terms with Manchester United ahead of a summer move. The England midfielder has failed to agree terms on a new contract at Stamford Bridge and looks set to quit the Blues, with United his preferred landing spot.

Mount is said to have agreed personal terms in a major breakthrough for United, who will next table a formal offer to Todd Boehly and co to test their resolve. Chelsea had previously stated that a fee of around £60million would be necessary to prise the 24-year-old away, but as an exit looks more likely then the Blues could be forced to lower their asking price.

Few Chelsea supporters had wished for Mount to leave the club, having grown from an academy starlet to a key man prior to a difficult season that saw the Blues finish in 12th place.

Silva appears to share the same sentiment as the club’s fanbase, having spotted the news on Instagram that Mount had agreed terms with United he posted two crying emojis to signal his unhappiness at the deal. Even though a fee has not been agreed, Silva has sent a clear message to the club that losing Mount will be a huge blow.

There is still work to be done in order to finalise a move, with the two teams needing to come to an understanding in regards to a transfer fee, as Silva potentially has made a last-gasp plea to the Chelsea chiefs that more work should be done to persuade Mount to stay at Stamford Bridge – though his farewell on the final day of the season may have suggested that there was no chance of a U-turn.

Interim boss Frank Lampard also made it clear that there was a very slim chance of retaining Mount. “From working with Mason and other players when I was here before, they’ve either gone on to be really important players for the club that have a real relation with the fans, back and forth, because they really feel the club when they’ve been in the academy since eight years of age,” Lampard said last month.

“And some of them have moved on to other clubs and the club have done well out of that. They’ve gone on and you’ve wished them well in their careers.

“I think with Mason particularly, as an individual, I don’t know what the solution is going to be because it’s a club and Mason issue.

“In the old days, it was, ‘why are you leaving the club?’ In the modern day, players move on. It’s a shame we’ve got into a situation where it looks like it’s happening maybe now.”
