Chelsea star Noni Madueke’s message to Ben Chilwell after red card
Frank Lampard reviews Real Madrid's win against Chelsea
Chelsea star Ben Chilwell had a message of support from team-mate Noni Madueke after his red card against Real Madrid, which spoke volumes about who was at fault. With his side a goal behind at the Bernabeu the England star was shown a straight red after pulling back Madrid winger Rodrygo on the shoulder when the Brazilian was through on goal.
Chilwell was the last man when he made the 59th minute challenge and referee Francois Letexier deemed that the left-back had denied a clear goalscoring opportunity. Chilwell broke his silence and took to social media on Thursday to apologise for the sending off.
He posted: “Slept on it, and just want to apologise to my team mates and the fans. I made a decision in a split second last night and it was a mistake. I always give everything for the team and I will continue to do so. Thank you for the support.”
The Blues star was sent a host of comments from fans who blamed Marc Cucurella for the red card. The Spaniard came on for injured Kalidou Koulibaly just four minutes before the red card incident and was blamed for poor positioning which resulted in Rodrygo running in on goal.
Koulibaly appeared to get sucked in by Rodrygo’s decoy run moments before Chilwell was forced into making the last-ditch challenge tackle resulting in a red card. Chelsea winger Noni Madueke missed out on the game due to not being registered for Champions League football as only three January signings were allowed to be registered.
The former PSV winger was left out as Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez took the spots. However, the 21-year-old voiced his opinion and showed how good a team-mate he is by coming out in support for his compatriot. He commented: “Not your fault bro” followed by blue heart.

Despite the clear consensus amongst fans others felt that Chilwell was also to blame. Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said on CBS Sports’ coverage: “For me, Cucurella is at fault but that (the sending off) is even more at fault. Don’t pull someone back and give a red card away. The reason you pay a goalkeeper is to do his job and to get you out of trouble defensively – that’s what he’s there for. Let him do his job.
“You’re then down to 10 men, he’s now going to miss the second leg, and it still would have been difficult for Rodrygo to score from there. Going down to 10 men could have completely taken them out of that tie.”
