Mason Mount has become the first Chelsea player to talk about rumours linking the Manchester United outcast with a move to Stamford Bridge. The future of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is consuming his native country and within minutes of walking off the pitch after England’s historic 6-2 win over Iran, one Portuguese journalist stopped Mount to ask him about the possibility of a Chelsea reprieve.
United have taken legal advice with a view to terminating his contract, claiming his recent interview with Piers Morgan has brought the club into disrepute.
Ronaldo still has six months of his contract left, worth £16m, and a lucrative short-term deal elsewhere would help bring United’s battle with a former club legend to a more satisfactory conclusion.
Chelsea had stuttered slightly immediately before the World Cup after a promising start under new manager Graham Potter and the impetus of a marquee signing such as Ronaldo for the new American owners could kick-start them back into Champions League contention.
So with the ripples of Ronaldo’s comments have been surrounding the tournament in Qatar, Mount walked into an immediate grilling into his thoughts on the situation.
“How do you feel about rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo going to Chelsea?” the Portuguese journalist asked the stunned Mount.
“Listen, I’m away on international duty and with England at the moment so that’s all I’m focusing on,” he said. “I’ve just played my first World Cup game, I’m not really thinking about too much else. And that experience I’ve just had is something that I dreamed of as a kid.”
This week Corriere dello Sport reported that Chelsea had an agreement to sign Ronaldo before he made the decision to return to Old Trafford 18 months ago.
However, the most recent indications are that Chelsea have grown cold on the idea of welcoming him into the fold, suggesting that the intrigue over his future among his nation’s media is set to rumble on throughout the tournament.
Portugal begin their campaign against Ghana in Group H on Thursday.
