Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has argued why he should sensationally beat Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe to the Ballon d’Or when the winner is announced on Monday. The Italian has enjoyed an incredible year and is on the shortlist to win the award for the first time.

Jorginho has become a key member of Thomas Tuchel’s side and helped them win the Champions League in May.

His performances under the German have eroded criticism directed his way earlier in his Chelsea career.

A Euro 2020 winner with Italy, Jorginho was named the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year for the 2020-21 campaign.

And the 29-year-old believes he offers things that other Ballon d’Or contenders cannot.

“Yes, I consider myself a candidate,” he told Brazilian outlet Placar.

“Because of my achievements and my performances last season. I won two of Europe’s biggest tournaments, something that few other players have ever done.

“Of course, my characteristics are totally different to those of Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Mbappe and others.

“I don’t have their goals or assists, and nor should I, given my position on the pitch.

“But I’m convinced of what I’ve done, and I’m sure I have good credentials to compete for the Ballon d’Or.”

Chelsea boss Tuchel has already argued that Jorginho should win the gong, which is given to the best performing individual in world football.

Jorginho has played in 42 games under the 48-year-old in all competitions since the latter replaced Frank Lampard in January.

Chelsea are currently top of the Premier League and Jorginho has been key to their success.

He has featured in 11 top-flight fixtures and in all five Champions League group stage clashes.

The Blues are through to the knockout rounds in Europe.

Tuchel believes Jorginho deserves to be recognised as one of the best players in the world and would like to see one of his players win the Ballon d’Or, with fellow Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount also nominated.

“Jorginho deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” Tuchel argued in October.

“He is a very intelligent player and it is a pleasure to be his coach. He has a great vision of football.

“For me, individual prizes do not have great significance, it is impossible to make a real comparison between several players of different roles. I would like one of my players to win it because I would know what the effect would be.

“Then Jorginho is a good person and an excellent player, but in general it (winning an individual prize) is not the most important thing.”
