Chelsea staff regularly talk about Erling Haaland after missing out on the Borussia Dortmund star in the summer transfer window. And Thomas Tuchel has opened up on those negotiations.
As the race for Haaland heats up once again, Tuchel has disclosed how close Chelsea came to signing the wonderkid in the summer.
The Norway international has started this season in red-hot form, scoring nine in six Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund.
Some of the biggest clubs in the world are desperate to sign the 21-year-old, including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona but Manchester City are reportedly winning the battle.
Chelsea had their own interest in the summer and were desperately trying to figure out how to prise him away from the Signal Iduna Park.
But Dortmund insisted he was not for sale, leading to the Blues forking out £97.5million for Romelu Lukaku.
And there was a tinge of regret when asked about the negotiations over the summer from Tuchel, who admitted that the staff at Chelsea regularly talk about Haaland.
“We talked about Erling Haaland a couple of times, including during the transfer window. But then it seemed absolutely unrealistic and not at all feasible,” Tuchel told SportBild.
“We talk about him regularly, of course, because he’s a fantastic player and clearly the defining figure at Dortmund, who is a big rival for us in the Champions League.
“I don’t think we were really close to getting him. But let us see what will happen the next weeks.”
Haaland will see a £68m release clause come into play in the summer which will spark a frenzy in the transfer window.
Chelsea, on the other hand, look out of the race and have other concerns with a defender and a midfielder higher on their list of priorities.
Declan Rice has been widely tipped as the top target while the Blues remain in the race for Jules Kounde after Sevilla rebuffed their bids in the summer.
Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni is also in their sights but face a battle with United over all three with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also keen on the trio.
