Chelsea sorry for ‘hateful chanting’ as fans slam Hillsborough and Heysel songs

Chelsea have apologised for "hateful chanting" after Liverpool fans slammed their Hillsborough and Heysel songs.

The chants could be heard during the Blues' goalless draw with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night. Songs targeting the visiting supporters were heard loudly at the match, including chants of "always the victims, it's never your fault" and "murderers". Chelsea have now issued a statement apologising for the chants, while the Premier League have also commented on the incident.

In a statement, the club said: "Chelsea FC condemns the inappropriate chants heard from some home fans during this evening’s game. Hateful chanting has no place in football and we apologise to anyone who has been offended by them."

The chants from Chelsea fans come after Manchester City apologised after their own fans' had chanted similar songs during their victory over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Reds supporters were quick to condemn the chanting during the match, with one tweeting: "Murderers chant heard clearly on TV, grim."

Another said: "Someone needs to take a stand and deal with this, why do these fans not sing about their own team." A third added: "Seriously what is being done to prevent this from happening. It is abhorrent."

Following Chelsea's apology, the Premier League responded with a statement of their own in which they condemned the chanting heard during the match.

In a statement on Twitter, the league said: "The Premier League condemns the tragedy chanting heard at tonight’s match between Chelsea and Liverpool. We continue to treat this as an unacceptable issue and are seeking to address it as a priority."

Liverpool also followed Chelsea's statement with a strongly worded statement of their own which read: "We know the impact these vile chants have on those who continue to suffer as a result of football tragedies. For their sake, this has to stop."
