Chelsea sink to new low as Todd Boehly spends £145m per Premier League win

Chelsea have sunk to a new low as their dismal start to the new season means they have spent a whopping £145million for every Premier League win in 2023. The west London giants were taken over by Todd Boehly in May 2022 after former oligarch owner Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club following Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
Boehly has been more than happy to get his cheque book out time and time again since completing his takeover and has splashed the cash to bring in a whole host of new players. In January, the American broke the British transfer record when he bought Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for £107m. Two weeks before that he prised Mykhaylo Mudryk away from Shakhtar Donetsk for £88.5m, with six other players also arriving throughout the window.
Boehly showed no signs of curbing his spending in the summer as he snapped-up Moises Caicedo from Brighton for a fee that could rise to £115m, with 12 more players also arriving at Stamford Bridge during the window.
The 50-year-old has spent around £725m since the start of January to bring in new faces. But, incredibly, Chelsea have only won five Premier League matches during that time. And the Blues owner could be accused of wasting his cash due to the paltry number of wins his team have managed.

Chelsea fell to 14th in the table on Sunday after they were defeated 1-0 by Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. The Blues’ only league victory this campaign came against lowly Luton, with Raheem Sterling scoring a brace in last month’s encounter at Stamford Bridge as the hosts ran out 3-0 winners.
Chelsea did begin the season with a 1-1 draw against Liverpool and claimed a share of the spoils away at Bournemouth last weekend. But the team have also suffered defeats at the hands of West Ham and Nottingham Forest this season, with manager Mauricio Pochettino already coming under pressure, despite only taking the helm in the summer.

“Give me time,” implored Pochettino after his side’s latest defeat. “They (the owners) are disappointed, they arrived at the club and are so excited to build a project. Of course they feel disappointed but at the same time they need to support the plan. We need to be aware about what is going on but in some way we need to be calm because the team is creating, the team is alive, the team is fighting every single action.”
Chelsea are set to face Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday before returning to Premier League action next Monday to take on west London rivals Fulham at Craven Cottage.
