Chelsea shambles season saw snoozing star miss bus and players with untied laces

Football fans far and wide will be glum as another Premier League season ends on Sunday, but Chelsea supporters may well be glad to see the campaign's conclusion.

The club's lowest points tally of the Premier League era will result in their first bottom-half finish since 1996, with interim manager Frank Lampard set to step aside for a second time this summer. The club's all-time top scorer was the fourth man to lead the side this season after the infamous firings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, while Bruno Saltor also stood in as caretaker.

But it's not just Todd Boehly's questionable running of the club or the carousel of tacticians that's had a negative impact at Stamford Bridge. Certain stars are also culpable for the cacophony of concessions that's led to a slip in standards at the club.

Mykhaylo Mudryk was the most recent to fall afoul in the public eye after fat-shaming a fellow gym-goer prior to Thursday's 4-1 thrashing at Manchester United. Just when one would think the Ukrainian would be keen to keep his head down after failing to prove worth a fraction of his £88.5million transfer fee.

It's but the latest example of the misplaced priorities in a squad where such oversights have become all too rife. A failure to properly prepare is apparent in training, too, with reports of players turning up with untied laces, a habit the likes of Pep Guardiola would not abide for long.

Are Chelsea the biggest disappointment in the Premier League this season? Let us know in the comments section below.

The Telegraph recounted instances of a player missing the team bus for a match 'on at least one occasion'. Heading home for a nap after training is no new practice in the Premier League – but failing to answer the necessary alarm is somewhat unforgiveable.

The Blues will wrap up the current campaign with – at best – two wins from their last 14 games, the kind of return that was unheard of under previous managers. That record is all the more damning given Chelsea's £600m transfer spend since Boehly took over just last year.

With no European football to think of next year and expectations disastrously low, the only way is up in 2023/24. It's understood Mauricio Pochettino is close to taking the reins from Lampard, with another summer overhaul believed to be on the cards.

For all the blame directed at the club's higher-ups, however, all signs suggest the players have hardly helped those in charge succeed. Lampard's successor is certain to have a task on their hands in restructuring the squad, but some players must take their own responsibility in rescuing reputations at Stamford Bridge.
