Chelsea: Lampard comes out fighting as pressure grows

Chelsea see Thomas Tuchel as the best option to replace Frank Lampard, pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft has claimed. The Blues boss is under pressure in the wake of his side’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Leicester on Tuesday. And another managerial casualty could be on the cards at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were dire against Leicester, with Lampard’s side slipping to a sixth Premier League defeat of the campaign on Tuesday night.

Wilfried Ndidi put the Foxes in front in the sixth minute, with James Maddison then scoring their second shortly before half time.

Chelsea were unable to muster a response and saw a Timo Werner goal chalked off for offside.

For Lampard, it means the pressure is on.

Chelsea expected big things at the start of the campaign after spending big on the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Hakim Ziyech.

But they’re now firmly out of the title race and also finding themselves with a huge fight to finish in the Premier League top four.

And Fjortoft has claimed that Chelsea see former PSG boss Tuchel as the best option to replace the struggling Lampard, saying on Twitter: “Re: Tuchel.

“Agents and Chelsea – representatives have been talking about bringing Tuchel in.

“I understand no decision has been made in terms of Lampard yet, but if he goes Tuchel is seen as the best replacement in the middle of the season.”

Tuchel was previously linked with Chelsea in 2018, even holding an interview with the club hierarchy.

But the German opted against rocking up at Stamford Bridge, deciding instead to replace Unai Emery at Ligue 1 giants PSG.

Tuchel did well during his two-and-a-half years in Paris, helping them win consecutive Ligue 1 titles and also making the Champions League final last season.

But he was axed for being outspoken and for allowing PSG to drift into a title race with Lyon, with Mauricio Pochettino being named as his replacement.

Meanwhile, Lampard has attempted to shrug off the mounting sack pressure in the aftermath of the result at the King Power Stadium.

“I can’t get caught up in what the reaction will be because I’d be sitting here all day concerned about it,” said Lampard.

“I’m not the only manager to be put under this pressure but the good thing for me is I’m good at handling pressure.”

He slammed his side for the lack of desire on show, adding: “The general theme [against Leicester] was slower, more sluggish.

“It was lacking confidence but also lacking a bit of desire to run.

“When a team is confident, they look like Leicester. Or like we did a month ago.

“The very clear message to the players is when you’re playing well, if you relax a little bit, then this game kicks you right up the backside.”

Lampard also swatted aside criticism over his frequent tinkering with his side.

“I see that mentioned a lot,” he said.

“We’re not the finished article. You can’t just conjure up the best team.

“Players have to make a spot their own. In an ideal world it would be very easy not to change the team. When you’re searching for performances and individual improvements, its normal that a team doesn’t pick itself.

“I took this job knowing there would be difficult times.”
