Chelsea owner Boehly has already done something Abramovich never did
Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has already done something that Roman Abramovich never did during his 19 years at the club. The American bought the Blues less than a year ago but has already sacked two managers.
Potter’s dismissal was announced by Chelsea on Sunday evening. Boehly had previously been supportive of the 47-year-old throughout his reign.
However, Saturday’s loss to Aston Villa proved to be enough for Boehly to make a change in the dugout. And in doing so, he has already sacked two managers in a single season, something Abramovich never did.
Abramovich earned a reputation for firing managers at Stamford Bridge whenever things started to go badly. But the Russian never sacked more than one during the same campaign.

Graham Potter’s final press conference before Chelsea sacking
Boehly relieved Thomas Tuchel of his duties last September, just days after the summer transfer window had shut. Potter was swiftly brought in to replace him after compensation with Brighton was agreed at more than £21million.
Potter won just seven Premier League matches after taking over, averaging at just over £3m per win. On Twitter, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher pointed out that Boehly has used a similar approach to sacking managers as his predecessor despite previously vowing not to do so.
Carragher wrote, accompanied by crying laughter emojis: “Todd said he would be different to Roman. I feel for Graham Potter, but it was inevitable.
“You don’t change Tuchel for Potter. Ridiculous decision to start with.”

Abramovich first sacked a manager in the summer of 2004, when he replaced Claudio Ranieri with Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese remained in the job until September 2007 before Avram Grant took over for the remainder of the campaign but he wasn’t sacked until the season was over.
Abramovich had a tendency to give an interim boss several months in charge and did so the following campaign when he replaced the sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari with Guus Hiddink. Rafa Benitez took up a similar role to Hiddink in November 2012, before the Dutchman returned again on a temporary basis three years later.
Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Mourinho again and Frank Lampard were all sacked mid-season during Abramovich’s reign. However, their replacements, temporary or permanent, would always see out the rest of the season at least.
Bruno Saltor is now in caretaker charge of Chelsea, with 10 games of the season remaining. It remains to be seen if Boehly will bring in a permanent successor to Potter before the summer.
